REAL ID update - Federal Identification for Travel and entering secure federal facilities

The federal REAL ID Act places new rules on which forms of identification may be used to board flights within the United States and enter secure federal facilities, such as military bases, federal courthouses, and other federal facilities.

The Federal Government will begin enforcing REAL ID on October 1, 2021 (one year later than previously announced).

A California issued REAL ID driver license or identification card meets these new requirements and is marked with a gold bear and star. For Californians wishing to apply for the REAL ID here is the link:

    1) Learn about the CARES act. Last Friday, the US just announced it's biggest financial recovery package ever. There's money for individuals and a variety of different programs for business owners.

    2) Cash is king - see what discretionary expenses you might temporarily reduce without inhibiting your lifestyle. Also, many utility and financial service providers just became a whole lot more flexible in their terms.

    3) Don't let the market drop spook you - now is the time to revisit your financial plan and see what trajectory you're on.

If you are expecting a refund, get your tax returns filed as soon as you are able so that you are not delaying the receipt of your tax refund.

If you owe taxes for the 2019 tax year, the payments are now not due until July 15th. Hold off on making these payments until much closer to the due date as there are no interest or penalties assessed so long as the tax is paid by July 15th.

If you or your business are impacted by the Coronavirus and/or the shut down, be aware of government sponsored programs that are available to assist you. There are programs to assist with student loans, unemployment benefits as well as federal loans for small businesses, etc.

The US Consulates are all closed. USCIS is still doing processing but the wait times for everything are now really long!

E-3 renewals in country are estimated to take about 12 months.

All visa applications that were submitted just prior to the closure are on hold.

Also, they have stopped all premium processing and are refunding any premium processing fees that have been paid.

I hope you are all well and staying healthy - mentally and physically!  I still cannot believe where we are today, it is incredible to think just how quickly so many lives can be turned upside down! I admire so much the resilience shown by many.

As I’m sure you are well aware, the hospitality industry is one of the industries that has been badly hit and it was indeed a very strong blow for our young business. We are confident we can weather this storm as a business and excited to return when we get this virus under control, but very sad that we cannot continue to pay our staff if we are going to pull through.  Consequently, like so many, our team is without any form of income.

We have started a gofundme for our staff and we would be so grateful if you could contribute any amount to help them get through this challenging time.  You can find the page here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/hotel-san-francisco-team

Thank you for your support and we truly cannot wait to get back to serving you!

For any students seeking to apply to bachelor degrees at Australian universities, please contact the University of Melbourne North America Office in San Francisco (Todd St Vrain, Manager, Julia Jerving Country Officer) at north-america@unimelb.edu.au.  Please let us know in particular of any high school students seeking to commence in Semester 2 (July 2020) adversely affected by the corona virus.

The University of Melbourne also offers a 1-2 week pre-college Young Leaders program in July for high school students age 14-17.  Students follow an academic interest for a week and live on campus in a residential college with Australian and international high school students.  It's a great way to explore future interests and experience an Australian university.  Weekly program costs of AU$1,900 (US$1,090) covers tuition ,room and board.  Applications close May 22nd. We are hopeful this year's program will proceed. See https://www.trinity.unimelb.edu.au/young-leaders-program for more information or contact the North America office at north-america@unimelb.edu.au
