Presidents Message

It’s a special time of year in San Francisco with our lingering summer weather and the city gripped in SF Giants and World Series fever. Orange & black is clearly the latest fashion trend!

The AFL Grand Final in September was an equally feverish time with over 400 fans watching the broadcast at Jillian’s. Despite the resounding win to the Hawthorn Hawks, the Sydney Swans fans were in good spirits and it seemed a great night was had by all, including the many Aussie travelers who found their way to our event.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is supported by our VP, Tom Klein and our Corporate Member, Telstra Global. Telstra entered a team in the Light the Night Walk fundraiser on September 23. AACC Board members Matt Lough, Gordon Stirling & I walked 2 miles around AT&T Park and helped to raise several thousand dollars for this worthy cause.

The SF International Women Entrepreneurs Forum event on October 2 was a sell-out, standing room only affair. Over 100 attendees were treated to some candid advice and insights from the outstanding international panel of advisors, investors and entrepreneurs on how to successfully finance your “big” idea. Viki Forrest, CEO of ANZA Tech and AACC member was a panelist and was able to offer her own insights and experiences of bringing Australian start-ups into the US market.

I mentioned last month that Australian author, Richard Flanagan visited San Francisco. It’s now been announced that he is the 2014 winner of the Man Booker Prize for his novel “Narrow Road to the Deep North” which is a wonderful recognition and accolade. Congratulations to Richard!

We’ve received feedback that some members have missed our regular drinks night get-togethers that we used to have a couple of years ago. We’ve now planned one for November 20th in San Francisco. More details to come

So in the coming weeks the AACC will host an Aussie Club event on November 4 and save the date for December 2 for our Holiday party that we co-host with the Kiwis. Once again, it will be at the Anchor Brewery in Protrero Hill. We hope to see you there!

As always thank you for your continued support.

Amazon relaunched their Amazon Web Services (AWS) popup loft in Market street in the city in October. They had successfully trialled the concept, a physical store where anywhere could take courses, they call them bootcamps, attend lectures and schedule one on one sessions with AWS technical architects. We attended several bootcamps and some great lectures including NASA's Chief

Technology and Innovation Officer (CTIO) talking about the next ten years of tech and what it means to NASA. Cloud services play a big part in NASA's future.

We've been using AWS services for several years now. In just 8 years Amazon have completely reinvented and totally disrupted the provisioning of server hardware and all the related services that power corporations and the internet. Google and Microsoft are chasing Amazon who has left all the old titans, including HP and IBM to name a few, way behind. Server and hardware infrastructure that would have cost tens of thousands of dollars to acquire and thousands of dollars a month to run now

costs as little as a hundred dollars a month. This has enabled many small startups, like DeZolve, and many tech savvy small and medium enterprises to 'play with the big kids'.

Are using AWS products or cloud services to power your business? Let us know your thoughts. You can find us on twitter @dezolvedecisions or on Facebook. Just search for DeZolve.

AMCHAM Partnership

We're also delighted to announce a new partnership with the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia (AmCham). This will provide some added value to your membership so look for more information to come as we develop some exciting new initiatives.

Please contact Dawn for further information and connection to AMCHAM.

The San Francisco International Women Entrepreneurs Forum, established in 2013, is a unique alliance of international chambers, business associations and organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Forum delivers a platform for diverse international organizations to collaborate and share resources and give visibility to various projects and initiatives, start-ups and businesses directed to or run by women. Through this collaboration we have inspired many women to change the conversation on how we are perceived in business and as entrepreneurs.

Some examples of the changes that have been instigated both locally and internationally include the following:
  • Launch of our first international Hub in Spain in March 2014 hosted by the US Embassy in Madrid, with liaisons in Madrid and the Canary Islands. In the latter, we are building alliances with different institutions to start a Youth Program for girls to learn how to code and to establish a Social Lab.
  • The establishment of other Hubs is being discussed with liaisons in Australia, China (Beijing), Italy, Mexico and Sweden.
  • Jane Sloane from Global Fund for Women, our guest speaker in March, inspired many of attendees to join the movement to enhance the livelihoods of women in developing countries.
  • Members of the Forum organizations will continue to drive programs that are challenging and thought provoking to stimulate innovative approaches to business and other initiatives.
We welcome the participation of like-minded individuals as we endeavor to drive change through the exchange of ideas, opinions and viewpoints.

CREATIVE DESTRUCTION AT MID-LIFE

“Every act of creation is first an act of destruction.”

- Pablo Picasso

One evening in 2007, when I was 38 years old, I started reading ‘Understanding the Mid-Life Crisis’ by Peter O’Connor, as I thought it would help my clients. Within two pages I knew I needed the book more than they did. O’Connor talked about the loss of meaning, the futility, the confusion and exhaustion he’d experienced in his own life, and which I was desperately trying to avoid admitting to in my own. What followed, through his book, was an understanding of my own midlife and how to address it, which was, precisely and counter-intuitively, to let go. Thus began an amazing journey and breakthrough into something far better than I had before. It was confusing, painful, essential.

I met a man at a social event recently. Intelligent, articulate, forty-seven years old – his façade wasunmistakable. Within minutes we started to talk about what was really going on, which involved his bewilderment at not understanding his own midlife.

Within an hour he said I knew him better than anyone in the world. That was only because he was courageous enough to be so honest. He also understood that it was his façade that gave him away.  Read more....

Are you out of status and need a passport?
The consulate is not required to report our out-of-status clients to the US government.

Emergency Management

Do you know what to do the moment an earthquake hits?
Experiencing an earthquake is pretty uncommon in Australia so many of us need a reminder what to do: Drop, Cover and Hold on!

The consulate will practice this drill as part of the Great California Shakeout on Thursday 16th October at 10.16 am. Why don’t you practice the same drill at home and identify primary and secondary exits and ensure your family knows what to do at home and away from home.

KTVU recently reported based on USGS reports, that heavily populated area near San Francisco are in danger of an imminent major earthquake.

Please take a moment to ensure you have emergency water and food supplies at your home. Please refer to this Red Cross on-line calculator to help you calculate your necessary supplies.

2014 Victorian State Government Election
If you have questions about the upcoming election in November, please refer to the VIC Election website for information. We anticipate that we will be taking votes from Wednesday 19th November until Wednesday 26th November 2014.
